First Day of Camp—January 4, by Gaurav Jalan, Indian delegate

At camp in Kolkata today, I did not know any campers and I did not fully understand their Kolkata sign language. Their sign language was different. It was hard to learn and to communicate with them. But I teach them so that they can understand.  Even though our sign languages are different, I can use what GRO taught me. The people at camp do not understand so I helped teach them. I spent time teaching them and making sure they learn about communication.  They enjoyed learning about communication. They got excited when they could understand me.

Before GRO I did not know much about helping deaf people. I did not know how to teach deaf people. When I joined GRO I learned about having discussions with deaf people. GRO helped me find ways to help others. Now I want to help teach deaf people and children. I know what I can do. After today I see what I can do— and I want to do more. I want to work again tomorrow and for the rest of the week.  I know that what I teach people today can be passed on to others. I would join GRO again next year. I want to stay involved with GRO. The reason why I want to join GRO again is because I want the deaf community to develop. The deaf community can do more.
